English 101 - Dr. Mandy Suhr-Sytsma
Abstract of Project 2 - Changing the culture of writing instruction in the U.S. to ACCOMMODATE all Englishes
In my analysis - Changing the Culture of Writing Instruction in the U.S. to Accommodate All Englishes - I propose solutions to the issue of division in teaching of writing pedagogy between ESOL students and native English language speakers. More than just proposing strategies for teachers, I give out rampant solutions that would extensively change the culture of instruction in the United States. I propose that there needs to be a
shift in class instruction culture toward appreciation of the backgrounds and
languages where each student comes from, through less focus on organization and
structure of writing and increased cultural awareness in instruction. Through these changes, which I delve into my essay extensively, I offer a solution to change the divide in writing competencies. Furthermore, I argue that the goal of ESOL writing is not to change the communicative
competence of a student toward something that is preferred by teachers or
academic departments, but rather accept these differences in competencies. Through this, I set-up an importance for what academic writing should look like and how students' writing should not be influenced to the extent that is suggested by sources; to the extent of changing their competencies to one that is preferred by academic institutions. Overall, the topic that is explored in this project by me and two of my classmates, is over issues that exist in the world of ESL teaching. My analysis adds one perspective to the discussion of changing classroom culture to accommodate all student regardless of their cultural or first language background.
